Cuffs! I really wanted to make a coat with big cuffs for my daughter. I think that the hands and arms of all small children are, like their faces, always so active and expressive of what they are feeling and what they want to do. Waving and clapping their hands with joy, raising their arms toward us to be held, or spreading them for a big hug. They are already so cute with their tiny hands, but with big, cute, eye-catching cuffs, they will be irresistible.

I also fell in love with the bright turquoise color which is good on both boys and girls. And with simple and bold tweed stitches, we will give them bright shining-star hand signals!

Brown Sheep Company, Lamb’s Pride Bulky [85% Wool/15% Mohair; 125 yards/114 meters per 4 ounce/113 gram skein];

M10 Crème [MC]; 4[5, 5, 6] skeins
M187 Turquoise Depths [CC]; 1 skein (all sizes)

Recommended needle sizes

US #10.5/6.5 mm straight needles
US #10/6 mm 16 inch or longer circular needle
or any size needles to obtain the gauge.

GAUGE

13 sts and 26 sts = 4 inches in Garter st on larger size needles
15 sts and 24 sts = 4 inches in Star Tweed st on larger size needles

PATTERN NOTES

Star Tweed is a quick and easy bulky garter stitch coat for a walking toddler through kindergartener, accented with turquoise/white star tweed stitches on the bottom hem and folded cuffs. Both the star tweed stitch and garter stitch make the garment thick and firm, and great as a winter coat. Star tweed stitches are worked on right side at the bottom of the garment, but on wrong side for the cuffs to be shown by folding.

NOTE: All slip stitches (sl) are worked purlwise with yarn held in back.

STAR TWEED STITCH (multiple of 4 + 1 st)
Row 1: With CC, * k1, sl1, M1, sl1, k1, pass the first slipped st over the last 3 sts; repeat from * across to last st, k1.
Row 2: With CC, purl across.
Row 3: With MC, k2, * k1, sl1, M1, sl1, k1, pass first slipped st over the last 3 sts; repeat from * across to last 3 st, k3.
Row 4: With MC, purl across.

Rows 7-24: Join CC and work Patt St (Rows 1-4) for 18 rows, ending with Row 2; break CC.
Row 25: With MC, * k4[5, 5, 6], k2tog; repeat from * 8 times more, k7[2, 6, 1]: 52[56, 60, 64] sts.
Row 26: Knit across.

BUTTON BAND

Using circular needle and MC, with RS facing, and beginning at left front neck edge, pick up and knit 45[49, 57, 61] sts.
Work 8[8, 10, 10] rows in Garter st.
Bind off all sts kwise.

BUTTONHOLE BAND

Using circular needle and MC, with RS facing, and beginning at right front bottom edge, pick up and knit 45[49, 57, 61] sts.
Work 4 rows in Garter st.
Buttonhole Row (WS): K3, YO, k2tog, knit across.
Work 3[3, 5, 5] rows in Garter st.
Bind off all sts kwise.

Set in Sleeves. Seam sleeves and sides of body. Fold cuffs to show Patt st.
Attach a button opposite buttonhole.
Weave in all ends.
