Snowflakes

Easy
By Thomas Wermuth

Being born and raised in Kentucky did not prepare me for the winters I spent as a young adult in Canada. It became necessary to rely on the warmth of hot chocolate, a roaring fireplace, and warm wooly mittens and scarves to soothe my soul. Mittens interspurced with bits of fleece give both the mittens and scarf the familiar look of a snowy day, whether you are in the Canadian woods or the Colorado Rockies.

PATTERN NOTES

Mittens and Scarf are knitted traditionally, with pieces of fleece inserted into knitting. Contrasting fleece is knit into the mitten every sixth st on every sixth round beginning in the first st on the first fleece rnd and in the third st on the next fleece rnd. Contrasting fleece is knit into the scarf every tenth st on every twentieth round beginning in the first st on Rnd 11 and in the fifth st on the next fleece rnd. Continue to alternate placement of fleece in same manner throughout. Scarf is knitted "tube style" in order to hide fleece ends, giving extra warmth.

Skills Required

Knitting on double pointed needles.

INSTRUCTIONS

Preparing Fleece
Cut about a three inch piece of the roving. Split this in half lengthwise (2 pieces) Split the halves in half lengthwise (4 pieces), split again (8 pieces) and finally once again. You now have 16 pieces of very wispy wool.
Roll each of these wisps between the palms of your hands.
To knit the fleece in, insert needle into next st as if to knit and take a bit of the piece of fleece and place over the inserted needle with the ends even and to the inside. Pick up yarn and knit off both the fleece and stitch as usual. On the next round the fleece/yarn stitches are knit as one stitch. Be careful to insert needle into both the fleece and yarn when knitting the subsequent rnd.

SnowflakesMITTENS
With smaller needles, cast on 30 (30, 33) sts dividing on three needles. Join ends being careful not to twist sts.
Work k2, p1 rib for 2 (2.25, 2.5) inches.
Change to larger needles and knit 1 rnd, inserting fleece into this rnd.
Continue adding fleece from this point on, making sure you keep in mind the palms, fingertips, and thumb.
Next Rnd: P1, inc 1 st in next st, k1, inc 1 st in next st, p1, k to end of round: 32[32, 35] sts.
Next Rnd: P1, k5, p1, k to end of rnd. Repeat this rnd 3 times.
Continue increasing for Thumb Gore between the purl marker sts next rnd, then every fourth rnd 0 (1, 1) more times: 7 (9, 9) sts between the purl markers.
Work even in established pattern for 2 more rnds
Next Rnd: K1, place 7(9, 9) of the Thumb Gore sts on a st holder or scrap piece of yarn. Cast on 3 sts to replace those sts and continue to k in rounds until work measures 1.5 (2, 2.5) inches from the ribbing: 30[30, 33] sts.
Size 5-7 yrs only
Next rnd: K2tog, knit around: [32] sts.
To prepare for decreasing at the end of the mitten, arrange sts on three needles as follows:
            1st needle: 15[15, 16] sts
            2nd needle: 8[8, 8] sts
            3rd needle: 7[7, 8] sts

SnowflakesThumb
Slip 7[7, 9] sts from holder onto dpns, with RS facing, pick up 3 sts at base of cast on sts; divide evenly onto three needles: 10[10, 12] sts.
Knit every rnd until Thumb measures 1[1.25, 1.5] inches or desired length.
Last Rnd: K2tog around: 5[5, 6] sts.
Break yarn leaving a 10 inch tail. With tapestry needle, thread yarn tail through remaining sts, pulling tightly to close.

SCARF
On larger needles, cast on 42 sts, divide onto three needles. Join to work in rnds, being careful not to twist sts.
Rnds 1-11: P1, k20, pm, p1, k20.
Knit 10 rnds in established pattern.
Rnd 11: Work in pattern around, inserting fleece at 10 st intervals around beginning in the first st.

Work even for 10 more rows.
Bind off all sts in pattern.

FINISHING

Mittens: Turn mitten inside out. Gently pick at the fleece to smooth it out over the inside. Weave in any yarn ends. Scarf: Turn scarf inside out. Gently pick at the fleece to smooth it out over the inside. Turn scarf right side out. Block scarf flat, using purl sts as side seams. It may be helpful to insert sturdy cardboard inside the scarf to shape when blocking. Weave two end openings closed. If desired, attach fringe to finish the scarf.

Isn't the life cycle amazing? 50 years ago my mom taught me how to knit, and I've been at it ever since. My now 87 year old mother is teaching the kids in the neighborhood how to knit. Several years ago I taught my daughter, Allegra, how to knit before her wedding, and she has been obsessed with it ever since. I now have the good fortune to knit for my beautiful granddaughter, Satya. Isn't the life cycle amazing!
