Koda

Easy
By Joan Beebe

When I was a child I had a bear that I loved so much, I wore the fur off of him. Koda is a slightly smaller version of the one I had back then, right down to his nubby little tail. I chose the name Koda for this bear because Koda is the Dakota Sioux word for "friend".

SIZE

11.5 inches tall worked in heavy weight yarn (Bear worked in light weight yarn measures approximately 6.5 inches).

MATERIALS

Plymouth Sinsation [80% Rayon, 20% wool; 38 yards /35 meters per 1.75 ounce/50 gram ball];

3369 Dark Red; 3 balls

Recommended needle sizes

US #8/5 mm dpns (set of 5) or needles 2-3 sizes smaller than recommended for your yarn

NOTIONS

Polyester stuffing
Tapestry needle
.5 inch buttons – 2, Safety eyes, scraps of felt or embroidery floss for eyes

GAUGE

14.5 sts and 16 rows = 4 inches in St st
Gauge is not important in this project. Choose a textured yarn and needles 2-3 sizes smaller than what is recommended on the label. You want to work the sts tightly so that stuffing will not show through.

PATTERN NOTES

Increases are worked by knitting into the front and the back of a stitch (kfb).
Koda is worked in rnds and features no-sew assembly. The left leg is worked first, then set aside. The right leg is worked, then joined to left leg at crotch to form the base of the body, followed by the body, head and ears, knit all in one piece. Arm stitches are picked up at the side of the body and worked out. Finally, the tail stitches are picked up at the rear and worked out.
Shaping of the feet, belly, rear, and muzzle is achieved by working short rows. The shaping rows are quite intense, and these rnds are best worked away from all distractions!

Skills Required

Working in rounds, short rows.
