Every week, I take my 5-year-old daughter to her creative movement dance class. While I wait for her class to finish, I knit (of course!) as well as watch all the dancers coming and going.

I love to listen to the sounds coming from the tap dancing class, their shoes all tapping in unison while the instructor shouts, “5, 6, 7, 8!” Being around all the dancers and hearing their energetic class gave me the inspiration for this doll.

FINISHING

Sew in any loose ends on all pieces.

Legs
Lightly stuff legs with polyester stuffing.  Pull pants loop onto doll’s leg, where CC1 meets MC. Sew pants loop onto leg, attaching at 2nd row of CC1.   When you sew, make sure you are pulling yarn around base of St st “V” on top part, and through the center of the “Vs” on the bottom part – this will essentially hide your join and make it look as if it were knitted together.

Shoes
Cut long strand (about 22 inches) of ⅛ inch black grosgrain ribbon.  Pull through shoes near top and tie in a bow.  Trim excess ribbon.
Sew buttons onto bottom of shoes: using CC1, sew larger button onto the heel, smaller button onto the sole of shoe.  Double knot yarn tightly on inside of shoe to secure.  Make sure button holes are all aligned.  Stuff front area of shoes lightly with polyester stuffing.  With CC1, sew shoes onto legs on the third row below CC2, leaving top 2 rows of cyan blue socks showing.

Body
With MC, make a French knot belly button right above black pants line.  With CC1, sew legs onto body, joining St st as described above (pulling yarn around base of “V” and then through the center of adjoining “Vs”).  Pull upper legs together to sew area where legs meet body.  Stuff arms with polyester stuffing and with MC, sew them onto body (sew around each arm at least twice to ensure it is very secure).  Stuff body with polyester stuffing.

Face
With CC3, make 2 French knot eyes.  With CC5 (or scrap yarn) pull yarn up through upper right area of eye and back down into center of French knot to make a “twinkle” in both her eyes.  With MC, make a French knot nose under eye area.  Double knot all French knots on inside of work to secure. With CC4 (or scrap yarn) backstitch 3 sts for smile.  Use photos as guide. Stuff head with polyester stuffing. Sew up any openings remaining in back or head seam.

Detail

Hair
With CC3, make big loops (about 8 inches long) from head to end of loop.  Your loops should go around the hairline all around the forehead, sides of head and neck area.  The longer the loops, the longer the ponytail will be.  Pull hair into a ponytail.  Gently tie back with scrap yarn.  With CC3, sew in and out of the strands at the ponytail base, ensuring you don’t sew the scrap yarn. This will help secure the hair. Remove scrap yarn. With CC3, wrap base of ponytail 2 or 3 times to help secure ponytail further; weave in any loose ends. Trim ponytail by cutting excess yarn until desired length is reached.  Make sure any loops that remain are cut to straight strands.  Make about 7 or 8 loops (11 inches each) around top of forehead and just to the side: these will become side-swept bangs.  Pull across forehead and into secured ponytail.

Hair Tie
With double pointed needles and CC2, cast on 3 sts.  Knit a 5 inch i-cord.  Bind off all sts. Cut a ⅛ inch piece of braided elastic at least 7 inches in length. With yarn needle, pull elastic through center of i-cord. Pull elastic ends together and tie in a tight double knot. Cut off excess elastic. Sew ends of i-cord together, over elastic knot. Sew in any loose ends. Pull hair tie over ponytail and twist it around once, to secure it to base of ponytail. You may want to make a second hair tie for your own little tap dancer!

Shirt
With RS facing, sew sides together up to arm area, keeping sewing yarn colors accurate with work, starting at pointed tip of hanky-hem.  Turn right side out.  Pull shirt over body.  Sew on cap sleeves RS facing out.
