Flora

By Kate Blackburn
Intermediate

I have an active toddler who wants to examine everywhere and everything, and with the arrival of Spring and warmer weather there's a whole world to explore outside. I wanted to knit a jacket that would keep an active little girl warm without being restrictive. I like the style of traditional, a-line matinee jacket patterns, but chose a cheerful, Spring-like green cotton yarn for a less frilly version.. The large pockets are ideal for stashing away treasures found while on a big outdoors adventure.

Pattern Notes

The jacket is worked from the neck downwards in Stockinette stitch. Increases are made for the raglan shaping and then the sleeve stitches are held on scrap yarn while the body is worked. Increases are made at the back of the jacket after the armhole shaping. The moss stitch button band and buttonholes are worked at the same time as the body, which finishes with a moss stitch edging.

The sleeves are worked after the body is completed and end with long, moss stitch cuffs that can be rolled over. Stitches are picked up around the neckline and knitted in moss stitch to form an oversized collar. The pockets are sewn on separately after blocking.

Sk2p: slip next stitch kwise, k2tog, pass slipped stitch over
M1R: with left needle, pick up strand laying between stitch just worked and next stitch from back to front. With right needle, knit into the front of the picked up stitch.
M1L: with left needle, pick up strand laying between stitch just worked and next stitch from front to back. With right needle, knit into the back of the picked up stitch
MB: make bobble: knit into the front, back, and front of next stitch to make 3 sts. Pass these 3 sts back to the left needle. Kfb, k1, kfb to make 5 sts.  Pass these 5 sts back to the left needle.  Ssk, k1, k2tog, pass these 3 sts back to the left needle. Sk2p to make 1 st.  Leave this stitch on the right hand needle – one bobble completed.
