Petite Purls

By Carey Huffman

Spring is a beautiful but also very messy time of year. Depending on the part of the country in which you live, you normally deal with thawing snow or lots of rainy days. Either way, you get mud. In an effort to keep toddlers in a somewhat presentable state, these knit pants fold up, hopefully out of the reach of the majority of splashing. You are on your own for keeping the top half clean!

Pattern Notes

Important! About Gauge: Because Rowan Denim shrinks significantly vertically after washing, making a gauge swatch and washing it is vital. Numbers are provided in the pattern if you are substituting for a yarn that does not shrink but it is still wise to wash your gauge swatch before hand.

About Fit: For best fit measure child's hips at widest point with diaper on. Cloth diapered children may measure a size higher than they normally wear - if that is the case follow the instructions for the measured hip size up and then make the legs a size smaller.

One row buttonhole: Slip 1 st knitwise onto right hand needle, bring yarn to front, slip 1 st knitwise. Pass the second stitch from the right hand needle over the first to bind off. Continue until the number of stitches in the buttonhole are bound off. Slip the last stitch on the right hand needle back to the left.  Starting from the beginning of the buttonhole cast on the number of stitch in the buttonhole plus 1. Slip the next stitch on the left hand needle purlwise to the right and pass the last cast on stitch over it. Slip that stitch back onto the left hand needle.

Teeth (Make 8)

In Ecru cast on 10 sts and divide sts across 3 or 4 dpns or in half for magic loop. Join to knit in the round, being careful not to twist.

Rnds 4 and 5: Knit around.
Rnd 6: K2tog 3 times.

Break yarn leaving a 10 inch tail. Thread yarn needle with tail and weave through remaining sts; pull tightly to close.

Weave in all ends on pants. Machine wash and dry pants in the same manner you did with your swatch. Because the dye on this yarn tends to bleed, it is best to do it in a load by itself or with only dark colors. Machine wash teeth in a separate load from pants.

With yarn ends sew 4 teeth to the bottom edge of each pocket flap. Using tailor's chalk, mark lines for horns according to the chart. With Ecru and yarn needle, embroider over chalk lines using chain stitch.

Sew one nose button and 2 eye buttons to each pocket flap.

Flip pants inside out and fold top edge over and align it to the garter stitch ridge just before the hip increases. Sew in place to form casing, leaving a 1 inch opening. Thread elastic through casing. Overlap elastic ends by ½ inch and sew together. Finish sewing the casing.
