Oh-Oh Hoodie

I love how hoodies look on kids, and they seem to love wearing them. This sweater has a great front pocket for you to experiment with color. The kids will love sticking their treasures in the pockets every time they wear it!

Boy’s version: Plymouth Galway [100% wool, 210 yards/191 meters per 3.5 ounce/100 gram ball];

Pattern Notes

The front, back and sleeves are made separately and then assembled. The hood is picked up from the neck edge and worked up. An i-cord trim is applied around the pockets and hood edge.

INSTRUCTIONS

Back

Cast on 66[74, 80, 86] sts using smaller needles and CC2. 
Row 1: *K2, p2; repeat from * to last 2[2, 0, 2] sts, k2[2, 0, 2]. 
Row 2: P2[2, 0, 2], *k2, p2; repeat from * to end. 
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 three times more. 
Change to larger needles and MC and work in St st (knit 1 row, purl 1 row) until back measures 8¼[9, 10, 11] inches from cast on edge, ending with a WS row. 

Shape Armholes
Bind off 6 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows: 54[62, 68, 74] sts.
Work even until armholes measure 5½[6, 6½, 7] inches, ending with a WS row.

Shape Shoulders
Bind off 16[19, 21, 23] at the beginning of the next 2 rows.
Place remaining 22[24, 26, 28] sts on a st holder for neck.

Front

Work as same as back until piece measures 3½ inches from cast on edge.

Pocket openings - First section

Row 1: K17[20, 21, 23], ssk, k1. Leave remaining sts on spare needle or scrap yarn to be worked later: 19[22, 23, 25] sts on front left edge.
Row 2: P1, p2togtbl, purl to end: 18[21, 22, 24] sts.
Row 3: Knit to last 3 sts, ssk, k1: 17[20, 21, 23] sts.
Rows 4-8: Repeat Rows 2 and 3, then repeat Row 2 once more: 14[17, 18, 20] sts.
Work 4[4, 6, 8] rows even.
Next row (RS): Knit to last st, m1, k1: 15[18, 19, 21] sts.
Next row (WS): P1, m1, purl to end: 16[19, 20, 22] sts.
Repeat the last 2 rows two more times.
Place 20[23, 24, 26] sts just worked on a st holder.

Center section
Row 1: With RS facing, rejoin yarn and bind off 2[2, 3, 4] sts (one st on right needle); k2tog, k16[18, 20, 20], ssk, k1.  Leave the remaining 22[25, 27, 30] sts to be worked later: 20[22, 24, 24] sts in center section.
Row 2: P1, p2togtbl, purl to last 3 sts, p2tog, p1: 18[20, 22, 22] sts.
Row 3: K1, k2tog, knit to last 3 sts, ssk, k1: 16[18, 22, 22] sts.
Rows 4-8: Repeat Rows 2 and 3, then repeat Row 2 once more: 10[12, 14, 14] sts.
Work 4[4, 6, 8] rows even.
Next row (RS): K1, m1, knit to last st, m1, k1: 12[14, 16, 16] sts.
Next row (WS): P1, m1, purl to last st, m1, p1: 14[16, 18, 18] sts.
Repeat the last 2 rows two more times.
Place 22[24, 26, 26] sts just worked on a st holder.

Place all the sections back on the needle in their respective order, ready to work a RS row. Knit across first section (right edge), cast on 2[2, 3, 4] sts, knit across center sts, cast on 2[2, 3, 4] sts, knit across last section (left edge: 66[74, 80, 86] sts.
Work even in St st until front measures 8¼[9, 10, 11] inches from cast on edge, ending with a WS row.

Shape Armholes

Bind off 6 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows: 54[62, 68, 74] sts.

Work even until armholes measure 2½[3, 3 ½, 4] inches, ending with a WS row.

Shape Neck

Row 1: K21[24, 27, 29], place center 12[14, 14, 16] sts on a st holder, join second ball of yarn and knit remaining 21[24, 27, 29] sts. 
Row 2: Purl to end of first side; with second ball, purl to end of second side.
Row 3: Knit to last 3 sts, ssk, k1; with second ball, k1, k2tog, knit to end: 20[23, 26, 28] sts each side.
Repeat Rows 2 and 3, 4[4, 5, 5] times: 16[19, 21, 23] sts each side.
Work even until front measures same length as back.
Bind off all sts. 

Sleeves (make 2)

UnknownCast on 34[38, 46, 46] sts using smaller needles and CC1.
Row 1: *K2, p2; repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2.
Row 2: P2, *k2, p2; repeat from * to end.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 two times more. 
Change to larger needles and MC. 
Beginning with a knit row, work in St st, and increase at the beginning and end of every fourth row until you have 56[60, 64, 68] sts. 
Work even until sleeve measures 8[10, 11, 12] inches from cast on edge or 1 inch MORE than desired length to underarm. 
Bind off all sts.

Pocket

Using larger needles and MC, cast on 46[54, 60, 66] sts. 
Work in St st and repeat the following stripe sequence until piece measures 5½[5½, 6, 6½] inches from cast on edge, ending with 2 rows MC.
Stripe sequence: 2 rows MC, 4 rows CC2.
Bind off all sts.

Center RS of pocket behind WS of front with the bottom of the pocket at the top of the ribbing and the top of the pocket just above the pocket holes. Whipstitch into place.

Hood

Sew shoulder seams. 
The hood is worked back and forth using a circular needle to accommodate working around the neck. Place the sts held for the front neck onto the circular needle.  Slide 6[7, 7, 8] sts over to the right needle (like you've already worked them).  This center spot will be the beginning and end of each row. 

Row 1: Join MC and knit across the remaining 6[7, 7, 8] front neck sts, pick up and knit 18 sts along the right neck edge, knit across 11[12, 13, 14] sts from the back neck holder, place a marker, knit the remaining 11[12, 13, 14] from the back neck holder, pick up and knit 18 sts down the left front neck,

knit the original 6[7, 7, 8] sts on the needle, ending at the center.  You have 70[74, 76, 80] sts.
Rows 2-4: Beginning with a purl row, work in St st for 3 rows, making sure not to join the hood into the round, and turning at the end of each row at the front neck opening. 
Row 5 (Increase Row): Knit to within one st of marker, m1, knit 1, slip marker, knit 1, m1, knit to end: 72[76, 78, 82] sts. 
Rows 6-17: Repeat rows 2-5 three more times. 
Work even in St st until hood measures 8[9, 10, 10] inches from pick up row, ending with a WS row. 
Decrease row: Knit to within 3 sts of the marker, k2tog, k1, slip marker, k1, ssk, knit to end.
UnknownNext Row: Purl to end.
Repeat this decrease row 3 more times.
Split the sts in half over 2 needles and graft closed with a kitchener stitch.  Alternately, you may bind off all sts and seam the hood top.

Edging: With DPN and CC1, cast on 3 sts. Beginning at the center front neck, *pick up and knit 1 st, slide the sts to the other end of the needle. Using next DPN, knit 2, k2togtbl: repeat from * up the right neck edge and around hood.

Bind off last 3 sts.  Overlap the cord and st in place.  Weave in ends. 

Pocket Edging

With DPN and CC1, cast on 3 sts.  Beginning at the center bottom of the pocket opening, *pick up and knit 1 st, slide the sts to the other end of the needle.  Using next DPN, knit 2, k2togtbl; repeat from * around the pocket hole opening.
Bind off last 3 sts.  Overlap the cord and stitch in place.  Weave in ends. 
Repeat for second pocket opening.

FINSIHING

Sew on sleeves.  Sew side and underarm seams.
Weave in ends. 
Block and give to your favorite kid.
