Chevron

By Ashley Rao
Easy

My favorite part of being pregnant was knitting for this unknown being that had taken up residence in my belly! Over the years, I had knitted dozens of baby sweaters for friends and relatives, but none of those patterns seemed right for my own baby. The striking geometry of this chevron pattern caught my eye and seemed to beg for experimentation – could I find a way to make those points and ridges magically fold together? The final result is this cardigan where the points and ridges of the chevron are seamlessly integrated into shaped increases throughout the yoke.

Pattern Notes

The cardigan is knit from the top down as a single piece. After the yoke shaping, the sleeves are worked back-and-forth on separate needles, then joined under the arms. Front and back sections are joined and worked back and forth on a circular needle. The front cardigan edges are picked up and finished in garter st. The entire garment is lightly felted by washing with hot water and soap. The front of the cardigan is closed with a separating zipper.

The lightly felted finish flattens out the deep ribbing to create a more subtly textured fabric. Knitted in a soft heathered yarn and finished with a sporty zipped closure, this chevron cardigan was my baby present for my own baby.

FINSIHING

Sew up underarm seams and weave in all loose ends. Wash the cardigan with hot water and gentle soap, felting until finished measurements are achieved. Because the base pattern stitch is a traveling rib, light felting will make the garment wider by flattening out the ribs.

When dry, baste in separating zipper to front cardigan edges so that garter st edges meet over the closed zipper. Finish seams on sewing machine or by hand.
