The Radiant Vest is all grown up and shapely with gently shifting yarn and a single easy button. Worked sideways with short rows to shape the yoke and extra side short rows for an a-line silhouette, this vest is quick, simple and stunning.

Gauge

14 sts and 20 rows = 4 inches in St st on larger needles. Change needle size if necessary to obtain correct gauge. Correct row gauge is very important in this garment as it is knit sideways.

Pattern Notes

This vest is worked sideways using short rows to shape the yoke and a-line side shaping. The row gauge is the most important gauge to achieve as this is what will determine the final circumference of the garment. The sleeves are finished using DPNS and a small border of Garter stitch that is picked up and worked after completing the main body. This pattern also contains notes on how to add or subtract short rows for the a-line shaping, be advised that if you make changes to the number of short rows in the waist shaping the garment will no longer match the schematic.

W&T: bring yarn to front of work, slip next st kwise, bring yarn to back of work, slip st tip to tip back to left needle, turn work. Wrapped st has been reoriented with right leg backwards.

Lifting up and working in wraps: using right needle lift wrap over wrapped st and place onto left needle, k2tog through back loop.

Skills Required

Short Rows, working on DPNS.

Instructions

Left Front
Using smaller needles cast on 78 [80, 84, 86, 89, 90, 94, 96] sts.

Notes on Sizing: To add length to this garment you will have to adjust the number of sts cast on, add 3-4 sts for 1 inch and 7 sts for each 2 inches you wish to add in length. These sts are to be added to the bottom of the garment, in the Setup Row this is the 2nd set of numbers. Also remember to add the increased sts to the first set of numbers in the Side Short Rows Row 1. If you desire a deeper or shorter yoke I suggest choosing a pre-determined set of yoke numbers and utilizing the instructions for that size in the Yoke Short Rows. If you are adding yoke repeats, space the 10 rows evenly between the sections, be aware that the row guide will no longer be accurate if you add or subtract yoke short rows.

Work 4 rows of Garter Stitch.

Change to larger needle.

Detail

Setup Row (WS): K25 [26, 28, 30, 32, 33, 35, 37], pm (yoke marker), k48 [49, 51, 51, 52, 52, 54, 54], pm (bottom border marker), k5.
Row 1: K5, sm, knit to yoke marker, sm, work Yoke Short Rows over following 25 [26, 28, 30, 32, 33, 35, 37] sts.
Continue working in pattern as established for 31 [37, 41, 47, 47, 51, 57, 61] more rows. See Row guide in pattern notes.

Side
Row 1: Work in pattern to marker, turn work, do not wrap.
Row 2: Work in pattern to end.
Repeat last 2 rows 2 [2, 2, 2, 4, 4, 4, 4] more times.
Next Row: Work in pattern to marker, sm, work Side Short Rows over following 48 [49, 51, 51, 52, 52, 54, 54] sts.

Notes on Sizing: To add 1¼ inches of circumference to the bottom of the garment work Side Short Rows again. By working this on both sides you will add 2½ inches to the total bottom hem circumference. To add circumference to both the bust and hem areas you can work an additional 2-6 even rows in this section but be aware that it will affect the circumference of the armhole opening.

Work 4 [4, 4, 4, 10, 10, 10, 10] rows even in pattern lifting up and working in wraps.
Cut yarn, slide sts from left needle tip to right needle tip so that the yoke marker is in between tips. Rejoin yarn to work across RS of yoke.

Detail

Left Sleeve
Continuing in Yoke Short Rows Pattern as established, work 44 [44, 44, 48, 54, 58, 58, 58] rows. Cut yarn, slip side sts back to left needle and reattach yarn to work RS of side.

Joining Row: Work in pattern to yoke marker, sm, work across yoke continuing Yoke Short Rows Pattern as established.
