Green Tython

Intermediate

This design was inspired by my 8-year old son, Logan, who is fascinated by snakes. I modeled the tie after the Green Python, a constrictor snake as I thought the tie would be a whimsical reminder of this fact.

Sizes

Boy from about 4 to 12 years

Finished Measurements

Length: 105 cm / 41 inches (without tongue)
Width: 8.25 cm / 3.25 inches at widest point

Materials

Knit Picks® Felici Sock Yarn [75% Merino, 25% Nylon; 218 yards / 198 meters per 1.76 ounce / 50 gram skein];

Model knit in Green Veggies colorway (no longer available); suggested alternate #24401 Aquarium; 1 skein

Recommended needle sizes

US #1½/2.5 mm 30 inch or longer (for magic loop)

Notions

Marker
Cable needle
Tapestry needle
a little bit of red yarn in a similar weight for the tongue
black yarn or thread to embroider the eyes

Gauge

36 sts and 46 rounds = 4 inches in St st.
Gauge is not critical to this design

Pattern Notes

The tie is knit in the round from the wide end up (bottom of the tie) and shaped with increases and decreases and is totally seamless. The back of the tie is knit in St st throughout. It can be left as is for a classic look or a tongue and eyes can be added for the full snake look.

The cable pattern is charted from cast on, but carefully note that the chart only shows the front of the tie. The back is always knit in St st, the increases and decreases follow those on the front exactly.

Note: If you want to embroider the eyes before finishing the tie so that you can hide tails more easily, now is a good time. Look under Finishing for more details. I prefer to wait until the end, so that I get a better idea of what my snake looks like and can position the eyes accordingly, but it is up to you.

FINISHING

Block tie before adding the tongue and eyes.

Tongue

The tongue is knit in garter stitch, back and forth.
With the tie right side facing you, pick up 3 sts in the middle of the “nose”, starting on the right hand side. Then, knit 9 rows
Then:
(Rs): K1, sl1, k1, psso.
You will now finish both sides of the “fork” separately as follows:
K 1 st for 3 rows, cut yarn and thread through loop.
Rep these 3 rows on the other side.

Eyes

Embroider the eyes using your favorite technique.
For the tie shown, I have used the French knot technique, you can find a tutorial here: http://www.purlbee.com/knot-know-how-tutorial/
There are other methods you can use, this one is also good: http://mochimochiland.com/2008/07/eye-eye-a-tutorial/

Corinne's passion for yarn started around age 8 when she started to knit. Today, she especially loves to design with sock yarn. Although French, she lives in Germany with her English partner and their two boys, where she can fully put her second passion, languages, to the test. Her patterns can be found on Ravelry on the Corinne's Knits designer page or on her blog.
