My son has been begging for a Pirates of The Caribbean vest for a long time. Since it is summer I decided to go the cotton route. He loves it, especially the stitching detail.

#312 Pear (MC); 2[2, 2, 3, 3]
#308 Mallard (CC1); 1[1, 1, 2, 2]
#310 Coffee (CC2); 1[1, 1, 1, 1]

Recommended needle sizes

US 7 (4.5 mm) 24 inch circular needle
US 7 (4.5 mm) double pointed needles (set of 5)

Gauge

20 sts and 27 rnds = 4 inches in St st
Gauge is critical

Pattern Notes

Vest is knit in the round from the bottom up. Neck and arm edges are added, knit in the round.

Skills Required

knitting in the round, basic decreases, changing color (stripes)

Instructions

Using CC1 and circular needle, cast on 120[128, 140, 148, 156] sts, place a marker and join in the round, being careful not to twist sts.
Rnd 1: *K2, p2; repeat from * to end of round.
Rnd 2: P1, k2, *p2, k2; repeat from * around to last st, p1. 
Repeat Rnds 1 and 2 until work measures 3[3½, 4, 4½, 5] inches.
Switch to MC.
Work in St st until work measures 8½[9½, 10½, 11½, 12½] inches from cast on edge.
Divide for Armholes: K52[56, 62, 64, 68], bind off next 8[8, 8, 10, 10] sts (1 st on right needle following bind off), k51[55, 61, 63, 67], place sts just worked onto scrap yarn for Front, bind off next 8[8, 8, 10, 10] sts (using first st of rnd to bind off last st).

Begin working in rows.
Row 1: Ssk, knit across to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1: 50[54, 60, 62, 66] sts.
Row 2: Purl across.
Row 3 (Decrease row):  K1, ssk, knit across to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1: 48[52, 58, 60, 64] sts.
Repeat Rows 2 and 3, 0[0, 1, 2, 3] times: 48[52, 56, 56, 58] sts.
Work even until armholes measure 5¼[5½, 6½, 6¾, 7¼] inches, ending with a WS row.
Divide for Neck: K14[16, 16, 16, 17], bind off next 20[20, 24, 24, 24] sts, knit across: 14[16, 16, 16, 17] sts for each shoulder.

Left Shoulder
Decrease 1 st at neck edge on next 3[3, 2, 1, 1] rows: 11[13, 14, 15, 16] sts.
Work until armhole measures 5¾[6, 7, 7¼, 7¾] inches, ending with a WS row.
Shoulder Shaping: K5[6, 7, 7, 8], w&t, purl to end; knit across, working wrap with the st it wraps; purl across.
Bind off all sts.

Right Shoulder
With WS facing, join MC and decrease 1 st at neck edge on next 3[3, 2, 1, 1] rows: 11[13, 14, 15, 16] sts.
Work even until armhole measures 5¾[6, 7, 7¼, 7¾] inches, ending with a RS row.
Shoulder Shaping: P5[6, 7, 7, 8], w&t, knit to end; purl across, working wrap with the st it wraps; knit across.
Bind off all sts.

Front

Slip Front sts back onto needle.
Row 1 (Decrease row):  K1, ssk, knit across to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1: 50[54, 60, 62, 66] sts.
Row 2: Purl across.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2, 1[1, 2, 3, 4] times: 48[52, 56, 56, 58] sts.
Work even until armholes measure 3½[4, 4½, 5, 5½] inches, ending with a WS row.
Divide for Neck: K18[19, 21, 21, 21], bind off next 12[14, 14, 14, 16] sts, knit across: 18[19, 21, 21, 21] sts for each shoulder.

Right Shoulder
Row 1: Purl to neck edge.
Row 2 (Decrease row): K1, ssk, knit to end: 17[18, 20, 20, 20] sts.
Continue to decrease 1 st at neck edge in same manner at the beginning of next 6[5, 6, 5, 4] RS rows: 11[13, 14, 15, 16] sts.
Work even until armhole measures 5¾[6, 7, 7¼, 7¾] inches, ending with a WS row.
Shoulder Shaping: K5[6, 7, 7, 8], w&t, purl to end; knit across, working wrap with the st it wraps; purl across.
Bind off all sts.

Left Shoulder
Row 1: With WS facing, join MC and purl across.
Row 2 (Decrease row): Knit across to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1: 17[18, 20, 20, 20] sts.
Continue to decrease 1 st at neck edge in same manner at the end of next 6[5, 6, 5, 4] RS rows: 11[13, 14, 15, 16] sts.
Work even until armhole measures 5¾[6, 7, 7¼, 7¾] inches, ending with a RS row.
Shoulder Shaping: P5[6, 7, 7, 8], w&t, knit to end; purl across, working wrap with the st it wraps; knit across.
Bind off all sts.

Finishing

Block work to measurements. Sew shoulder seams.
Rolled Neck Edge: With RS facing, using MC and double pointed needles and beginning at right shoulder seam, pick up 58[58, 62, 64, 66] sts evenly spaced around, place marker. Join to work in rnds.
Knit 4 rnds.
Bind off all sts.
Rolled Armhole Edge: With RS facing using MC and double pointed needles and beginning at bottom of armhole, pick up 54[56, 60, 66, 70] sts evenly spaced around, place marker. Join to work in rnds.
Knit 4 rnds.
Bind off all sts.
Repeat for second armhole edge.

With CC2 and using photo as a guide, embroider large X’s.
